General FAQ

Does the first-turn player receive stamina, even though they can't attack?

Yes, the first-turn player still receives 2 stamina. This is important because Champion effects can still be used during the first turn.

What is the cost to remove a status effect like Burn or Freeze, and when can you pay it?

You can pay 2 stamina per status effect during your Preparation Phase to remove it.

(Refer to the rulebook, page 15 – top section.)

If my Rearguard is destroyed or returned to my hand, can I still activate Rearguard’s ability?

In Portals & Champions, “Destroy” means to negate the card. Once destroyed, you cannot activate that Rearguard’s ability. However, other Rearguards can still be activated. When a Rearguard would be returned to your hand however, you can still activate it's effect in chain.

One portal can swap the Champion’s position, while in another Region that same Portal cannot. Is this a printing error or intentional?

This is intentional. Cards from different regions can have variations in stats or effects, even if they share the same name.

Does ‘once per turn’ reset after an attempt or only after a successful resolution? Example, if a Deity’s condition to empower is having 3 effectless Allies, can an opponent remove an Ally to stop this? And if so, can you try again?

The ‘once per turn’ limit applies to successful resolutions. For instance, a Champion can attack once per turn, but if their attack is blocked because the opponent closes the Portal—and you open it again—they can attempt a new attack.
Similarly with the Deity: if you have 3 effectless Allies and want to empower but your opponent reacts by exhausting one Ally, you can still play a new effectless Ally afterward and empower your Deity within the same turn.

Champion

If I trigger a Champion's ability and then choose to attack, do I pay Stamina twice?

No. You pay Stamina once to use your Champion on your turn—this single payment covers both its attack and its effect. Champions with the Reaction keyword can likewise spend that same Stamina to activate their ability on an opponent’s turn as well.

If an effect carries any extra cost beyond the Champion's Stamina cost, it will be called out explicitly in the ability text.

Can I activate a Champion's effect and then attack with it later in the same turn, or must both actions be consecutive?

You have full flexibility. After paying the Stamina cost, you can choose to activate a Champion's effect and/or attack with it at any point during your turn. These actions do not need to be consecutive.

Is it allowed to use multiple Champions in a non-consecutive manner within the same turn?

Yes. You can activate the effect of Champion A, then use Champion B's effect or attack, and later return to attack with Champion A, provided you don't exceed the once-per-turn usage limit for each Champion.

Combat

In combat, who uses their Rearguards first? Is it random or determined?

The defending player uses their Rearguards first, followed by the attacking player.(Refer to the rulebook, page 15 – bottom section.)

Allies

Is it correct that an effect or cost of an Ally always applies to the zone it’s in? (Unless it’s a global of course.) For example, for a cost like “exhaust 1 friendly ally”, should I use allies from the same zone in both cases?

Costs must be paid before the card is played, so you can exhaust an ally from a different zone than where you play the card.

Can I exhaust an enemy Ally that is about to charge during the Charge phase? If so, does it remain in the Deploy Zone?

You can exhaust Allies during the Charge phase, but only in response to a trigger or event. Charging itself isn’t a trigger, but the moment an Ally has finished charging is. So you can exhaust an enemy Ally after it has charged, not before. So it will be exhausted in the Charge Zone and not the Deploy Zone.
